Look into Typha as a source for charcoal. What it makes is powdery and needs briquetting, but there is Typha available most everywhere in the world, and where you have it, you need to clear and control it. Typha is the dessication machine that turns wetlands into drylands. It is also the breeding ground for many pests. And hiding underneath it there is soil that it has produced, suitable for use in rehabilitating desertified land, as is charcoal.
